- Breakbeat -
Breakbeat (sometimes breakbeats or breaks) is a term used to describe a collection of sub-genres of electronic music, usually characterized by the use of a non-straightened 4/4 drum pattern (as opposed to the steady beat of house or trance). These rhythms may be characterised by their intensive use of syncopation and polyrhythms, which are prominent in all music of African origin, including African American music.
Big Beat
One of the most commercially succesful genre. In here you can find The Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim... All characterized by the same beat sound. I think it's not bad, you can still find good sound, if you don't mind it a bit cheesy.
Rap
Everyone knows rap. But the tendency is to forget that it's also electronic music ! How did rap evolved ?
- Rap evolved from hip-hop, first differently on the east coast and the west coast. East coast first generation was quite silly, and nobody took themselves seriously. But in the west coast it went very differently : the style was more violent, and sold a lot. So the east more or less copied, and that's where the rap started to turn bad imo.
- In the early 90s one of west coast's master of rap (Dr. Dre) changed label and started making something called G-Funk, which can be summarized easily by listening to Snoop Dogg, the king of the genre. This was a reaction to the east gangsta rap, which did not appreciate... a east/west "war" ensued.
- Nowadays, it seems that the only criteria that rappers found to compete is record sales, so it all comes down to who's gonna have the more bling bling, the more bitches, the more pimp cars... Where's the music in this ? Well, maybe you should search around the field of new school hiphop.
R&B
Modern day R&B, as we can hear on radios such as "Skyrock", is an electronic evolution to Soul music. Even if it began pretty well, producers favoured quantity more than quality, and "Nu Soul" turned into "No Soul".
Turntablism
Turntablists consider turntable as an instrument. When this started, it was just a stylish effect, but now you can find World Championships as well as genius scratchers. A very promising branch, especially combined with other styles or classical instruments.
